About the county

Organized 1818

Wayne County is a third-class Missouri county, governed by a three-member County Commission and a set of independently elected offices — the arrangement most Missouri counties outside a charter form of government use. Greenville has been the county seat since the town was laid out in 1819.

Most offices share the courthouse in Greenville; a few, like the Sheriff and Coroner, operate from separate facilities. See the office directory below for each office’s mailing address and phone extension.

County Commission

  • Presiding Commissioner
  • Associate Commissioner, Eastern District
  • Associate Commissioner, Western District

The county’s governing body — one presiding commissioner elected countywide plus one associate commissioner from each district. Sets the county budget, oversees county property and roads, and handles administrative matters not assigned to another office.

County Clerk

Keeps the county’s official records and Commission minutes, administers elections and voter registration, and issues local licenses and permits.

Assessor

Determines the assessed value of real estate and personal property each year — the figure the Collector’s office uses to calculate tax bills.

Collector

Bills and collects real estate, personal property, and utility taxes, then distributes the proceeds monthly to the schools, road districts, and other entities that levy them.

Custodian of county funds — invests and disburses county money and reconciles accounts alongside the Collector and Commission.

Prosecuting Attorney

The county’s elected attorney — prosecutes criminal cases and represents the state in county court matters.

Sheriff

County law enforcement — patrol, jail operations, court security, and service of civil process.

Circuit Clerk

Clerk of the county’s circuit court — maintains court records, dockets, and filings for civil and criminal cases.

Public Administrator

Manages estates, guardianships, and conservatorships for residents unable to handle their own affairs.

Coroner

Investigates deaths that occur under circumstances the law requires to be examined, and determines cause and manner of death.
