A Union earthwork fort on a hill overlooking Patterson, about 100 feet square, established in 1861 to guard against Confederate raids out of Arkansas. Marmaduke’s 5,000-man force drove the garrison out in the Battle of Patterson in April 1863, and Shelby’s raiders destroyed much of the fort in September 1864. The earthen walls still hold their shape under the trees. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002; the Wayne County Historical Society owns and maintains the site, so contact the Society before visiting.
