Begun in 1938 and finished in 1941, the 109-foot earthen dam on the St. Francis River was the first large Army Corps of Engineers dam in Missouri, built for flood control under the 1936 Overton Act. Its lake is why Greenville moved. The Spillway Recreation Area below the dam has stairways down to the river.
