A one-room rural school established in 1857 in southern Logan Township, on land given by pioneer doctor and landowner James Monroe Woods; nearby Woods Cemetery takes its name from it. It was later consolidated into the Patterson school district, as were nearby Camp Creek and Cherry Grove schools. Wayne County once had dozens of country schools like it; future governor Sam A. Baker taught his first term at one of them, Bethel School in Black River Township.
