The original county seat, laid out in 1819 at a ford on the St. Francis River. When Wappapello Dam went in, the town moved to higher ground in the early 1940s; its buildings were hauled away but the foundations stayed. Today it’s the Corps of Engineers’ Greenville Recreation Area campground, where the Memory Lane trail follows the old streets and foundations, and the old town cemetery holds Civil War–era graves and suffragist Alice Curtice Moyer. On the National Register of Historic Places since 1990. The 3-mile Greenville Trail connects it to the modern town.
