Piedmont grew up around the railroad. The first scheduled St. Louis & Iron Mountain train pulled in on October 10, 1871, carrying railroad president Jay Gould and Governor B. Gratz Brown, four hours late after running short of fuel. The Missouri Pacific replaced the original wooden depot with the current building in the early 1940s.
